The meeting was called to order by the President, Tom Blair at 7:05pm.
The minutes of the May meeting were reviewed and approved.
Tim Riddle is not present, so there is no treasurer's report at this time.
Leon Dunbar Leon reports that there is good activity with the 4-H Club. The archery group is off until the fourth week of June. The Williston Observer is scheduled to be at the June 14th meeting to do an article on the club.
We are working on getting the traps which were purchased from the 3F Club in Lewiston, NY shipped to us.
An updated copy of the bylaws was reviewed, and barring any major objections from members, the revised bylaws will be approved at the July meeting. (See article below)
The Women on Target event will be held on June 7th. Nancy Anisfield and Terry Wilson will be conducting a hunting dog demonstration during the lunch period at this event. The scheduling as been changed slightly from last year to provide for better time utilization. We still need volunteers to instruct. So far, only 19 women have signed up. (See article below)
The program known last year as the "Learn to Shoot Trap" program is once again funded by the NRA through the Vermont Federation of Sportsman's Clubs. In light of the funding source, the NRA has requested that it be promoted as an "NRA Trap Shooting Camp". This program commenced on May 4th, and is now in full swing. We have had participant nearly every week, but not in large numbers. We may need more publicity. We also need volunteers to help with instruction.
Our All-Cycle trash and recycling bins are in place and operational. So far they seem to be working well. Members are encouraged pay attention to the receptacles so that expended shells, cardboard, and trash get placed in the correct containers.
The need for repair and rebuild of the left trap house, plus an enclosure to house one of our new Winchester traps was addressed. Mike Weaver is in the process of gathering the necessary supplies and materials. Donations are being gratefully accepted!
A new 5-stand panel is being designed to accommodate the new traps. Thank you Claude!
The houses on the 5-Stand range have been identified with letters that correspond to the menus on the shooting stations. It was discussed that as we bring new traps online, we will need to move to a system of numbers versus letters.
An expenditure of $105 was approved for a motor to install an oscillator on the right 5-Stand Trap.
A Fun Shoot is planned for August. (See article)
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15pm.
Wednesday Shooting
We are now shooting regularly on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to dark, generally closing around 7:00pm. This is a great way to blow off some mid-week steam and retain your mental health for the remainder of the work week!
Our attendance on Wednesdays has been down lately. Please keep this on your calendar, and come on out and have a little mid-week fun!
Club Merchandise
We still have a good supply of club patches and a few Medium and one 2XL T-Shirt. Please see Tom or Leon at the club if you would like to purchase one of these items. We are planning to order some new T-Shirts for the Summer of 2008. The price on the new shirts is not yet firm, but we are expecting them to be around $12-$14. If you would be interested in one of the new T-Shirts, please let us know. You can reserve a shirt by dropping an email to tblairvt@comcast.net. Please include the size and number of shirts.
Dumpster Update
As indicated in the minutes, we have now contracted for two dumpsters at the club, one for trash, including spent hulls, and one for cardboard recycling. The dumpsters have been delivered and are in operation. This seemed the environmentally responsible thing to do. Please help Leon and our club officers by separating your cardboard ammunition boxes from other trash, and paying attention to which container you are using. It will also help if you could please flatten all cardboard.
Women on Target
On June 7th, NCSC again hosted "Women on Target". Attendance was off a little from last year, but we still had over twenty women who came out to participate in this event in spite of very warm and humid conditions. We had a great time. Nancy Anisfield and Terry Wilson conducted a hunting dog demonstration during the lunch period. "Tank" and "Rimfire" were the highlights of the day!
A huge "Thank You" to all the people who helped with the registration and food. We also would like to acknowledge the folks who coached the participants and acted as range officers to ensure the safety of all concerned. We owe a particular recognition to Cindy Pease who spent many hours and many dollars, a lot of which probably never got reimbursed, to make this the successful event it was. Thank You Cindy!
We also recognize Nancy Anisfield, Veronica Beauregard, Christina Bean, Patrick Benner, John Vibber, Leon Dunbar, Claude Perry, Deb Jasinski, Claire Seglem, Susan Blair, and a bunch of other people I am sure I missed! Thanks to you all!
NRA Trap Shooting Camp
Starting on May 4th, we began offering a clinic every Sunday afternoon for new shooters. We have received a grant to continue the program, from the NRA through the Vermont Federation of Sportsmans Clubs. At the request of the NRA, it is known this year as the "NRA Trap Shooting Camp". The program is more formalized this year and requires complete registration for all participants, preferably in advance. Walk-Ins are being accepted at the discretion of the instructor. Classes are limited to ten per session, with preference given to those students who have pre-registered. So far we have had participants nearly every week, but not in large numbers. If you know people who you would like to introduce to shotgun sports, this is a great way to do it. For a mere $10.00, each participant gets about 2 hours of instruction, a box of ammunition, 25 targets, and a T-Shirt. That is a deal! We need people who can help with registration, who can instruct, or who can pull 5-Stand targets to free up Leon to instruct. Very cool hats are available for instructors! If you can assist in any way, please let Tom Blair know. (contact info at the end of this newsletter).
Fun Shoot
NCSC has committed to sponsoring a Fun Shoot in August. At this point it is looking like the third week, probably August 23rd. This is being planned as a 150 bird event, with 50 Trap Doubles, 25 Trap Singles/25 Trap Handicap (22 Yards), and 50 5-Stand targets. Prices are to be determined, but probably on the order of $15 per 50-bird event. It should be a fun day, so please mark your calendars, and watch for more info. We also need help. See a club officer if you are available to help with registration, scoring or range officer duties.
By-Laws
An update to the club By-Laws is proposed, to reflect our Wednesday meeting time and a few other minor adjustments. A copy of the proposed bylaws is included with this newsletter (pdf) or you can click here. Please review, and let a club officer know if you have any comments or concerns. We plan to adopt in July if there are no major objections.
In our Thoughts and Prayers
We have several members right now who are experiencing serious health problems. Gerry Moulton and Todd Murphy are battling some very aggressive and dangerous cancers. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
We are pleased to report that Burr Miller is back, making coffee, bringing the donuts, and shooting in the first squad each Sunday!
